About
The daily life of Laaz Lithgow, a young, orphaned detective living in the tropical archipelago state of Heliodor, is overrun with predicaments. Fearmongering over a shape-shifting alien race known as the Hanari floods the media, politicians are going missing, and crime organizations run the streets of Heliodor's capitol Cidade do Sol.
Before most of these problems can be addressed, however, more pressing issues arise - an enigmatic organization known only as Sauvageon has begun targeting Heliodor's well-loved prefect, Jetta Pavoni. Their claim? That she is the reason behind Heliodor's decline and must be brought down. At the same time, unrest has grown stronger among the pantheon of ruling deities (called Idols by mortals). Treachery, vengeance killings, and coup d'états are at an all-time high when it comes to them, as they commonly use ordinary people as pawns to carry out their wrathful deeds. And when it comes to confronting these furious and sly gods, some 'ordinary' people may learn more about themselves than they bargained for. Follow Laaz and his officer partner Zusa as they attempt to uncover just what the hell is even going on in their home city, one police report at a time. |
Setting
Albedo (the now terraformed Moon, named for its reflective properties) is almost entirely inhabited by genetically modified and cybernetic humans, the descendants of those who originally left Earth dozens of generations ago in order to escape persecution and torture.
Advanced genetic manipulation had become very regular and popular in most countries on Earth, allowing humanity to prosper with newfound abilities and strengths – cold resistance taken from arctic mammal genes, aquatic respiration from marine animal genes, and night vision from the genes of various nocturnal animals, to state a few.
Humans were coming close to being the true apex of natural life on Earth, but not without a price – for decades, biologists had been conducting illegal implementations of these genetic modifications on other fellow people, mostly those in poverty or others who could not afford such expensive medical procedures for whatever reason. These people, though originally consenting in the beginning, would often find themselves subject to dangerous operations and fetid living conditions as scientists would test out brand-new, theoretical, and unapproved technologies on them. As a result, many of these humans-made-lab-rats did not survive, and those who did were either too ashamed to show their faces in public, or held hostage by genetic engineers so that they wouldn’t tell anyone that they had been illegally tested on.
Eventually, a group of whistleblowers formed and exposed the disgusting acts committed by these scientists, causing a violent outrage that swept throughout the entirety of Earth. Families of those harmed or killed by illegal testing begged for answers, survivors recounted their experiences to reporters, and most large corporations that dealt in genetic modification had been disbanded due to the crisis. In the end, many of those affected (including innocent genetic engineers, left disappointed by their peers) decided to migrate to Albedo in pursuit of a new beginning. There, cosmetic genetic manipulation rose in popularity, as the Fenestran government had both lowered the cost of medical services and imposed strict regulations on medical practices.
